May 2012 IT Recruitment Market Summary
As the UK weather swings wildly between droughts and torrential rainfall it is reassuring to see the demand for permanent IT staff remains strong and has continued its trend for growth, this was tempered by a reduction in availability of permanent IT candidates. Whilst both the availability of, and demand for, IT Contract staff continued to rise in April.
Permanent IT Staff Market Update
The May edition of the monthly ‘Report on Jobs’, which is produced by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG, reported a modest rise in the number of permanent staff placements. However, the figures for April also showed a slight drop in the availability of candidates for permanent jobs, ending a 14-month long period of growth.
The continued economic uncertainty may be a contributing factor to the reduction in availability of permanent IT staff as candidates choose to remain with their current employer rather than opting for the uncertainty of joining a new organisation. We would therefore advise that clients looking to fill permanent positions will benefit from having an efficient recruitment process and the ability to make quick decisions on potential candidates.
IT Contractor Market Update
In contrast to the availability of permanent IT staff the availability of IT Contract staff, continued to rise in April, as did the demand for IT Contract staff. Due to this fact, the Langley James contract business has now increased by 200% in the last four months and we have maintained our record of filling 95% of all registered contractor vacancies in an average of just four days.
The REC and KMPG report highlighted a skills shortage amongst candidates in the IT and Computing sector. Therefore the firms with the swiftest recruitment processes and competitive salary offers will succeed in securing the best of the available candidates. Langley James recognise the importance of being able to fill positions in a timely manner.
